Postdoctoral Position – RNA Virology, Vaccine Design, and Virus–Host Interactions
The Andino Lab (UCSF) is recruiting an exceptional postdoctoral fellow to join a multidisciplinary program focused on the molecular virology and evolution of RNA viruses, and the development of next-generation live-attenuated vaccines. Our group integrates mechanistic virology, RNA biology, host–pathogen interactions, and synthetic biology to tackle problems of global health importance.
The successful candidate will work on one or more projects involving:
- Engineering highly stable, safe live-attenuated RNA virus vaccinesusing modular genetic strategies that control viral tropism, replication fidelity, and evolutionary stability.
Applications span enteroviruses and major flaviviruses. - Studying virus–host interactions at the molecular and cellular levels, including determinants of tissue specificity, innate immune evasion, and pathogenic mechanisms.
- Developing and testing vaccine candidates in relevant in vitro and in vivo models, in collaboration with international partners.
- Applying advanced genetic, computational, and evolutionary approachesto understand viral diversification, immune responses, and constraints that govern viral evolution.
Our research combines deep mechanistic expertise with a clear translational trajectory. The lab maintains strong collaborative networks across the Americas, Europe, and Japan to accelerate movement from concept to preclinical evaluation.
Qualifications
- PhD in virology, molecular biology, immunology, RNA biology, or a related field.
- Strong experimental skills in molecular virology, cell culture, or genetic engineering.
- Experience with animal models, RNA sequencing, or evolutionary analysis is a plus but not required.
- Creativity, independence, and motivation to pursue high-impact research.
Environment
UCSF offers a world-class environment in virology, infectious disease, and immunology, with access to cutting-edge facilities (BSL2/2+, BSL3, genomics, imaging, computational cores) and a vibrant scientific community. Postdocs receive strong mentoring, opportunities for leadership, and support for career development.
